One last trip down memory lane for tonight (can you tell I am digging through old files?), this time from January of 2007. This is a personal favorite and it came about in a funny way. They told us we could make some “creator t-shirts” with whatever art we wanted on them and they would sell a limited run on the network website. So I made this. And they said, “Yeah, not that one.” The calligraphy, by S.L. Lee, PhD., is from the Blue Spirit’s wanted poster.

Aw man! It would have been awesome!

While I’m at it, here is the “Have You Seen My flying Bison?” poster I made for the ATLA Book 2 episode, “Lake Laogai,” with calligraphy by S.L. Lee, PhD, slightly-less way back in May of 2006. Aang looks like an egg with Aang’s face drawn on it.

HAHA! They announced it, finally! I was incredibly fortunate to be asked to draw a short Avatar: The Last Airbender comic (10 pages) for Dark Horse’s Free Comic Book Day offerings! Being a giant ATLA nerd, I was BEYOND thrilled to contribute to that world in a small way. The story is written by one of my favourite comic people, Gene Yang, and will be available in May on Free Comic Book Day.

Above is the final cover, coloured by Cris Peter, who also coloured The Adventures of Superhero Girl, along with pencils, inks and thumbnails for the process junkies. I was drawing the cover before the story was nailed down, so I was told to draw “something exciting with Sokka & Suki, something action-y.” haha, okay.

So happy I go to do this! *_*

We’re all big fans of Faith’s work and very excited to work her for a short spell before she vanishes into the Nameless City.

Really looking forward to it!

So many shirtless guys in ATLA and Korra: not pictured: King Bumi, Ozai, Zuko, Prison Iroh, Guru Pathik…well, you get the idea.
Warm up doodle of the day with quick colours slapped on.

Zhao meets the Airbender.

An Agni Kai Zhao toy prototype does exist, but I don’t think it was ever mass produced or put in the stores?
I wonder why…

Please allow me a little moment of Water Tribe nostalgia and rambling (that, and I had no time to draw a new Zhao today).

Years ago, what started almost as joke, a little idea between friends of “what if Zhao had survived and lived among the water tribe” turned into a 447 pages monster. When an idea brick hits hard, it leaves a dent.

It was a learning experience. A great exercise. I look back at it, and there are so many things I’d love to tweak-fix, but I won’t Georges Lucas it. It is what it is, with its moments and its flaws. It was a blast to do.

It was only after 3 “chapters” that the idea of why the spirits would even spare Zhao’s life started to solidify. I never quite paid it off properly. Live and learn! As I said, it was done for fun and never properly planned.

In case anyone is curious about the Water Tribe AU, everything is archived here: http://noselfcontrol.deviantart.com/art/Water-Tribe-001-69837313

(thanks Mike and Bryan for having created this sandbox of fun characters to play around with)
