Tuesday Tip - Beat Boards / StoryboardsIt can be a daunting task to just “start storyboarding”. Because there’s so many things to think about when storyboarding, we all need a roadmap to know where we are going. Beat boards are not even the first step to creating a story, but it’s often the clearest way to pitch an early concept to someone. It’s also very useful to plan out the larger beats of a large physical sequence (action, chase, etc.). This way, you don’t have to go on a limb for a week or two and have to redo it all if it doesn’t work. They’re sort of like your Key Poses in animation, but put on a story scale. Does that make sense? Message me if you have any questions or suggestions about future posts.Norm

Happy Dragon Day!
Looked through the old folders and picked up some old story panels from the first film. The pace of production was quite hectic, and my drawings of the characters were more loose and cartoony.
The first 5 panels are from a deleted scene - viking kids fighting!
I really enjoyed drawing the other kids.

A deleted Kristoff intro scene on the DVD extras for Frozen I boarded! I had to look at a LOT of shirtless men x-treme ice climbing for reference. It was so tough to do.

Hey all, here are some of the questions I’ve received about submitting a portfolio for a story artist position (or internship). If you have questions, feel free to send them along and I will answer what I can.

How should I best present my portfolio if I was applying somewhere like Pixar?…

Good reference for people applying for storyboard job position. More clear and detailed than the answers I could give.

I recently was interviewed on KSL Morning News in Utah about my latest book I’m The Scariest Thing In The Jungle!

Not only about Dave’s books (which are awesome), but also about his experience of working on Guardians, with bonus storyboard panels!

wannabeanimator:

Just like I said in this ask, you should look at the kind of storyboards being made right now. TV, feature, and game animation all have their own styles of storyboarding. Studios, too. Certain things you’ll need for it no matter where or what you work on, though:

  • Quick drawing ability
  • Being able to deal with having 100+ of your boards thrown out and needing to be redone
  • Knowledge of composition
  • Knowledge of story/writing

Sneak peek storyboard from TOMORROW’S one hour premiere event!

Here Jinora and Tenzin stand in the hall of Avatar statues, which memorializes every Avatar who ever lived, when they are suddenly interrupted by our favorite airbending troublemakers.

The amount of work put into these Marvel animatics is pretty nuts.

JEBUS

SOME OF THESE AREN’T EVEN ANIMATICS THEY’RE FREAKING PENCIL TESTS

These kinds of ‘boards’ to stage movies are getting more and more popular and can I just

say how frightening that is I mean look at all the work these take??? How fucking GREAT these are??? SERIOUSLY this is what I’m gonna have to compete with????????

holy smokes

And we kept being told that live action boards don’t need to be as detailed as animation ones.

Bullcrap.
