A few Dragon doodles from my sketchbook. Stormfly might be my favorite dragon to draw—she’s like a giant, reptilian parrot.

Also, a Toothless sketch that I drew on an old story pad cover some months back and had completely forgotten about till now…

Lovely sketchies (I’m jealous, because I never do colors :( )

The 100% TRUE events of my evening, in a nutshell.
Was going to work, might have wasted time drawing some Pitch as a warm up, was going to rewatch some Korra episodes, when suddenly David Bowie and news of his new album appeared.

This is it, time to leave Guardians behind and return to the world of vikings and dragons.
On Monday, I’m starting on Dragons. I am honored to have been welcomed into their team. They are an ubertalented crew and wil be a wonderful source of inspiration.
Definitely a challenge!

Nostalgia hit.

Has it been 2 years already? That montage scene…worked on it with Alessandro Carloni, head of story. I can claim part of 1, then pretty much all of 3-4 and 5. Alessandro worked out the other beats (though another artist may have also have some input, perhaps for 6).

Thank heavens for animators, who make sense of doodles and turn it into gold.

ha ha, I just noticed Tuffnut rolling away on the ground in 8!

(Almost) Full view of the Toothless puppet- animatronics.
Interestingly, the rig that makes it move is put behind it, to allow for Toothless to crouch low to the ground. A different set up from Gronckles, Nadders and Nightmares, who have their rigs underneath their bellies.
(look at those padded feet, ha ha!)
From the How To Train Your Dragon stage show, opening in about two weeks in Melbourne, Australia.

Tom Owens is a storyboard artist from How To Train Your Dragon and director of the “Gift Of The Night Fury” special.

He has experience with dragons, and all the work it entails.

(gah, I love his rough work!)

From the How To Train Your Dragon stage show- the Toothless puppet.

One could nitpick little things about its look but… still so curious to see it move and in action!!!

First touring Australia. International dates announced later.
