Water Tribe- last ones I’m posting. That’s it, I’m done.

Most of what I was planning has been written in notes with a few drawings to support the ideas. Just an image that could be used as a panel to build the page from. Good to try and plan everything. Sometimes, I would go into full panel-pages for fun. 

A follow up on the mountain spirit part of the story. Some set up:

Azula and Nauja’s daughter just got swallowed up by the mountain spirit. Her brother is trying to rescue her and fails. Zhao shows up to help. They haven’t had the most friendly of relationship (Zhao being Zhao and all). At this point in the story though, a bond has started to form.

Just wanted to have fun with Zhao and his usual way of dealing with spirits: kicking, punching and yelling!

Water Tribe- OCs

I think I was putting a lot of OCs in Water Tribe  because I was so afraid of messing up with the main cast, ha ha! And now, with more official comics coming out, I feel good staying mostly out of their way.

OCs can be tough: you have to make them fun and entertaining, but at the same time, they are there to support the main character and his story. After all, Zhao would be pretty boring if he interacted with no one. 

If the follow up to Water Tribe had been made, it would have been to close up certain threads. Not only with the Ocean and Moon spirit, but also Nauja’s kids, that had never been found. In the story, they acted as Zhao’s main past connection to the northern water tribe.  

Another OC that would have been fun was Li-Yi, the prison warden that’s running after Zhao. Small, sadistic, prefered to fight with knives. I kept thinking “Himmler” when dealing with him, so I gave him small little round glasses. He did like children though.

Since I like Iroh a lot, I wanted to bring him back. That was just to have fun drawing him, ha ha! I also wanted to bring back Azula, because I like my Azula crazy and free!

This is a continuation of some previous panels I posted, with he mountain spirit waking up (courtesy of crazy Azula). I am very curious to see more of spirit stuff in the world of Avatar, so I am looking forward to future Korra episodes. It has been hinted at there will be more spirit shenanigans at the SDCC panel this past summer.

More Zhao!

Thank you everyone for your nice comments! I’m touched that people remember Water Tribe so fondly.

As thank you, I am thinking of posting just a few more things from my rambling of the possible follow up I had in mind. Not everything: as I said, a lot was unformed or badly developed ideas.

Just a bit of set up: this would have been towards the beginning of the story. Zhao’s a fugitive, and runs into the Guru. I was hesitating with this scene originally, thinking it was too much exposition. Then I remembered the first time Aang meets Roku’s spirit and is being told about Sozin’s comet and its deadline.

So I thought I could get away with that. Rough pages. Dialogue a bit murky, but basic idea’s there.

I won’t deny it, I had a blast doing that insanely long Zhao AU story a few years ago.

(Warning, long read…would have needed an editor, but what a great learning exercise, trying to tell a long story).

Some of you know I was toying with the idea of continuing it for a while. Problem is…it was shaping up to be another monster, page count wise: too many ideas, ramblings and shoe leather story wise. But there were some moments I would have loved to try and tell. Ideas that would have been a lot of fun to draw.

But moments don’t make a story. So I dropped it.

I just fished out two rough pages out of the bunch I had done for fun. For nostalgia’s sake and what might have been.
